What Maple Heights tap water is actually like
Maple Heights customers are served by Cleveland Water, which draws from Lake Erie through intakes 3 to 5 miles offshore in the central basin. Its 2025 water quality report lists total hardness of 105 to 130 mg/L as calcium carbonate, with an average of 117. That works out to about 6.8 grains per gallon on average by a simple conversion.
That is moderately hard water. It leaves spotting on glass and slow scale on a water heater, and a softener will reduce it. Your own tap can differ from the system average, so test it before you buy equipment.
Test your own tap before you buy anything
A hardness test strip costs little and tells you more than a sales pitch does.
Run a cold tap for a minute
Collect water from a kitchen or bathroom cold tap that has not been through a softener.
Use a hardness test strip or lab kit
Hardware stores sell strips. A lab test also covers iron and other minerals.
Compare to the utility figure
If your result is close to the 105 to 130 mg/L range, the report matches your home. If it differs, tell us.
Decide what the water is costing you
Scale on fixtures, spotted dishes and a shortened heater life are the practical reasons to treat water.
Softener, filter or neither
| What you want to fix | What helps | What it does not do |
|---|---|---|
| Scale on fixtures and glass. | Salt-based softener. | Does not remove chlorine taste. |
| Chlorine taste and smell. | Carbon filter. | Does not remove hardness. |
| Sand, rust flakes or sediment. | Sediment filter on the main line. | Does not soften or change taste. |
| Concern about lead from a service line. | Certified point-of-use filter, plus a line inventory check. | A softener does not remove lead. |

How a softener install ties into your plumbing
A softener needs three things. A cold water supply with a bypass valve, a drain for the regeneration water and an electrical outlet nearby. The basement near the main shutoff is the usual spot in Maple Heights homes.
We keep an air gap at the drain so waste water cannot flow back into the unit. We also place the softener so the outdoor hose bibs and the cold side of the kitchen sink can stay on untreated water if you prefer. Salt-softened water is not ideal for lawns or drinking in some homes.
Repairs we handle on existing units
- Salt bridge or mush in the brine tankA hard crust in the salt keeps brine from forming. We clear it and tell you what caused it.
- Broken or leaking control valveThe valve takes the most wear. We replace it or the seals when a unit leaks, stalls or will not cycle.
- Resin tank problemsOld resin loses capacity and stops softening, even when the unit regenerates normally.
- Drain line and brine line clogsA clogged drain line makes the unit overflow during regeneration.
- Re-installing after a moveIf a tank was damaged or a valve broken during moving, we inspect and reconnect it.
What the utility says about your water
Cleveland Water uses chlorine as its disinfectant and adds fluoride, with a system average of 0.99 ppm in the 2025 report. A softener does not change either one. A carbon filter changes chlorine taste, so ask which treatment goal comes first.
The report also says some homes have lead service lines, and Cleveland Water offers a service line inventory lookup by address on its website. If lead is your concern, check the line first. A water softener is not a lead solution.
Source type: Utility water quality reportSigns your softener needs service
Softeners fail quietly. These signs show up in the house before the unit alarms.
Spots and film return on glass
If hardness is getting through, resin or the control valve may be worn.
Salt level never drops
The unit may not be regenerating, or a salt bridge may have formed.
Water runs from the drain line all the time
A stuck valve can leave the unit in regeneration or backwash.
Soap does not lather and skin feels dry
The classic hard water signs come back when the softener stops working.
What you can do before we arrive
Take a photo of the nameplate on the softener or filter housing and note the salt type you use. Check the brine tank for a hard crust under the loose salt.
If the unit is leaking, close the bypass valve or shut the water to it and place a bucket under the drain line. Keep the area clear and tell us if the unit is in a finished space.
Nearby towns and related work
We install and repair water treatment in Maple Heights and in Bedford, which buys its water from Cleveland and reads its own meters. Scale builds up in tanks too, so ask about water heater installation with the softener. If a leak shows at the unit, leak detection can trace it.
Softener and filter plumbing, including the drain air gap, follows the Ohio Plumbing Code, OAC 4101:3.
Frequently asked questions
Cleveland Water reports total hardness of 105 to 130 mg/L as calcium carbonate, about 6.8 grains per gallon on average. Test your own tap, since homes can differ.
Not always. It is a comfort and scale decision. Spotting, scale on fixtures and appliance wear are the usual reasons people install one.
No. A softener removes hardness minerals. Chlorine taste calls for a carbon filter, and lead concerns call for checking the service line and using a certified filter.
Usually yes. Send the brand and a photo of the control valve and we will tell you what is likely wrong.
It drains to a floor drain, standpipe or laundry sink with an air gap. We pick the spot that works with your basement.
Close the bypass or shut off the water to it, then call our 24/7 line for active leaks. Routine repairs are scheduled during normal hours.
